Turnitin doesn't make the rules. It produces reports, and your institution, instructor or publisher decides what they mean. Still, a few rules apply almost everywhere.
Rules that apply almost everywhere
- Quote and cite. Matching text is fine when quoted and referenced. Unquoted matches are what readers question.
- No fixed "pass mark". There's no universal acceptable percentage. See acceptable similarity percentages.
- AI rules vary. Some courses ban AI, some allow it with a declaration. Turnitin's AI score is only one piece of evidence.
- Resubmission depends on settings. See resubmitting to Turnitin.
- Tricks count as misconduct. Hidden text, character swaps and image-only pages are treated as deliberate attempts to deceive.
