Independent guide. Not affiliated with Turnitin, LLC. Read the Turnitin disclaimer.
Turnitin accepts most common document formats for a similarity report, but the AI writing report is pickier. Here are both sets of rules.
Similarity report requirements
- File smaller than 100 MB.
- At least 20 words.
- Fewer than 800 pages.
- Text that can be extracted (not a scanned image).
| Accepted | Not accepted / no report |
|---|---|
| Word (DOC, DOCX), PDF with text, TXT, RTF, ODT, HTML, WordPerfect, PowerPoint, Hangul (HWP) | Password-protected files, Apple Pages (export first), image-only PDFs, macro-enabled DOCM, Microsoft Works |
AI writing report requirements
| Requirement | Limit |
|---|---|
| File size | Under 100 MB |
| Length | 300 to 30,000 words of long-form prose |
| Language | English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, German, Dutch or Turkish (details) |
| File type | DOCX, PDF, TXT, RTF |
Some older institutional guides still say 15,000 words. Turnitin's current limit is 30,000; longer theses should be checked in parts.
